Unity 3D, Xcode, Final Cut Pro, Bootcamp, Soul Calibur VI, Battery Life, Fan Noise, Power Efficiency and External Displays... In this review we deep dive into the new MacBook Pro 2018 and their Vega GPUs. Unity 3D - 555X built projects 6% faster than the Vega 16. Vega 16 ran on Ultra settings with around 30% faster frame rate. Soul Calibur VI - 555X could run 3440x1440 at 60fps with Low Quality. Vega 16 could run with Medium Quality. Final Cut Pro - Vega 16 rendered projects 3% faster. Battery Life - 555X combination had 3% longer battery life after 45 mins of drain - note the 555X combination was using a degraded battery while the Vega 16 had a fresh one, so 3% is at the least of the spectrum. Power Efficiency - Vega GPU consumed 30% less power when plugged into an external display (7W vs 10W), however boosted at a 30% higher clock rate demanding up to 50W compared to the 555X hitting a 30W wall. This was good for 3D demanding applications, but hurt CPU performance in balanced applications. Fan Noise - Mixed results, Vega 16 generally hit higher RPMs especially when it hit a higher clock speed, however the unit was newer and felt colder to the touch, probably needs more time to break in before conclusive results. NOTES Mojave is at least 10% slower than High Sierra, however the Vega MacBook Pros are pre-installed with Mojave with no easy way to downgrade to High Sierra. For the tests both computers were booted with a fresh install of Mojave.
