After booting the machine, the screen was black... After a while I started to make out a very faint mark on the screen, so I used the touch on my smartphone to find a dialogue box asking me if I forgot my password? If this happens to you, restart the system, hold down the alt key and wait until the boot selector screen shows. Everything will be extremely dim so make sure you use a torch to see what's going on. Select a drive to boot up with, you'll then be presented with a login menu, type in your password, then after about 30 seconds, the screen will just pop back into action and everything will be good again in the world. I have no idea why or how this happened. But hopefully this'll save you a trip and 2 week repair wait at the Apple Store.
