4K, Unlimited Recording, Flip out Screen, Image Stabilisation, Under $1000. What more could you want? Well, ok, better autofocus and better low light, but for a third of the price of a GH5 and some amazing footage shot over the year I can confidently say that the G85 is still the best value camera you can get in 2018. WHERE TO BUY Panasonic G85: http://vtudio.com/a/?a=panasonic+g85 WHY NOT THE PANASONIC G9? I had high hopes for the successor to the G85 but unfortunately Panasonic went in a new direction with the G line up and introduced limited recording, while it's predecessor was unlocked for unlimited recording, the G9 stops at the 10 or 30 minute mark. WHY NOT THE PANASONIC GH5? It's a great camera with exceptional features such as 4k/60, hevc encoding, but for 3x the cost of a G85 and still being crippled by its lack of decent autofocus and low light, it's a questionable buy in 2018. WHY NOT THE PANASONIC GH5s? It doesn't have image stabilisation. WHY NOT THE SONY A7 III? It doesn't have a flip out screen, recording is limited to 30 minutes and for a 2018 release you really should be expecting 4k/60 and hevc encoding support. WHAT CAMERA THEN? I'm honestly not sure, after the 2018 disappointments of the G9, GH5s and M50, I can only keep my hopes high for the Sony A7S III. REPAIR COST Unfortunately for me, I dropped my G85 and it broke in half, Panasonic refused to repair it - they never said why, but I assume it's because the damage was near the lens/sensor area and the cost of a sensor repair can be more than the price of a new camera. If you don't currently have insurance, make sure you do, as while the camera had been very solid, one bad angled drop and it can open in half.
